The varieties used for wine production at Quinta da Penina are the traditional Portuguese and some French recognized quality wine grapes.
Indigenous Portuguese red grape variety originally from northern Portugal, Douro and Beira. Considered the most valuable wine variety of Portugal has a high component of color, aroma and complexity.
The musts has medium/high acidity and high alcohol content; produce wines of great quality, soft, round and warm, reminding dark red berries, very ripe, with floral scents, dominated by violet and sweet scents remembering rock rose. Produces wines with great ability to ageing.

When it is fully ripe, produces powerful wines, rich, full bodied and tannic. Presents aromas of black fruit (blackberry), spice, pencil shavings, tar and tastes like leather and tobacco.
These are wines of great quality, to be kept in cellar; in a blend, they can add body, color and liveliness to wines less exuberant.
Portuguese autochthonous white grape variety grows all over the country. It presents musts with high acidity and medium alcoholic level. It produces wines with citric color with high capacity for ageing.
The wines have aromas of some citrus fruit, sometimes mineral. Over the years they develop scents of honey.
In the mouth, they are acidulous with notes of fruit and some complexity.
A very Old Portuguese white grape variety, originated from North Portugal.
Presents high natural acidity (6-9 g / l ac. tart.) and very good alcohol content (14% vol.). At Algarve reveals a good mineral acidity, citrus aroma of green fruit and fine mineral notes.
Improver variety, originates excellent wines with good ageing ability.
Portuguese white grape widespread throughout the country; also known as Síria or Roupeiro.
To show all their qualities it requires warm soil and a warm temperate climate, moderate, no rain in August / September.
It produces wines with a medium alcoholic and acid content, with citrus tones, intense aroma, with little notes of tropical fruits and ripe citrus.
In the Algarve can also produce fortified wines of great quality.
It is a Portuguese autochthonous white grape variety from Douro region.
Presents an average natural acidity (4-6 g / l ac. Tart.) and very good alcohol content (13-14%vol.).
It has a good potential for single variety wines or in blends, with Sercial and Crato Branco (Síria).
It produces wines of great quality, with good ageing ability, good aromatic intensity, resembling chamomile, plum, giving a fruity bouquet with some complexity. In the mouth it is engaging, with a medium acidity, good body and pleasant aroma.
French white grape variety originally from the Rhône region
Produces wines with light clear golden color, with scents of flowers (acacia, violet and honey), spices and fruits, mainly peach and apricot.
It has low acidity and high alcohol content. It is sometimes used to soften and perfume red wines from Syrah.
Should be used in blends with more acid and less aromatic grapes.
